What Is the G Permit?

The G Permit (Livret G) is a residence document issued to individuals residing in a neighboring country (e.g., France) and working in Switzerland. It authorizes cross-border employment under the Agreement on the Free Movement of Persons (AFMP) between Switzerland and the EU.

The G Permit holder must return to their country of residence at least once per week. This permit does not grant the right to reside in Switzerland.

Who Needs It?

EU/EFTA nationals residing in France and employed by a Swiss employer.
Cross-border employees living in France and working in a Swiss canton.
Self-employed cross-border workers carrying out gainful activity in Switzerland while residing in France.

Administrative Characteristics

Issued by cantonal migration authorities (Office cantonal de la population)
Linked to the employment contract with a Swiss employer
Requires proof of residence in the border zone of the neighboring country
The application is generally initiated by the Swiss employer
Requires valid identification (passport or identity card)
Proof of residence in France
Passport-style photo meeting Swiss standards

Validity and Renewal

Permanent or contract ≥ 1 year

G Permit valid for 5 years, renewable.

Contract < 1 year (fixed-term)

G Permit valid for the duration of the contract.

Renewal is done through cantonal authorities before the permit expires. If changing employers, a new permit must be requested.

What the G Permit Enables

Carry out salaried or self-employed work in Switzerland
Enrollment in Swiss social insurance (AVS/AI/APG/AC)
Ability to open a Swiss bank account
Access to Swiss pension pillars (2nd pillar LPP, 3rd pillar 3a)
The G Permit does NOT grant the right to permanently reside in Switzerland
